ADAPT October: Done!

The latest ADAPT coaching qualification course has now been completed, with all participants doing very well right to the end. Among the candidates were three of our Developing Athletes, which we are very happy about, and some great practitioners from all over the UK. We would like to congratulate everyone, who will now go on to complete their supervised coaching hours, and thanks for making it such a good week! The next UK course will be in early December, and is already almost fully booked.

Spooksville! Halloween Jam...

This month's Off the Wall Jam in London will be the Halloween edition, entitled Spooksville... As always the jam will be on the last Sunday of the month, this time on the 31st October starting at 1.30pm at the famed IMAX steps outside London Waterloo station. Edutain Workshops: October 25/26/28

The latest in our ongoing series of Edutain Workshops for the Positive Futures Programme happen this week, on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at various locations in the Westminster Borough of central London. The programme helps young people in disadvantaged areas of the inner cities gain access to sports activities and coaching. Westminster Parkour Camp: October 25-29

This week we will be running a Parkour Camp for the City of Westminster at Moberly Sports Centre in Kilburn, with sessions running every day from 10am to 1pm. This is the fourth camp we have done for Westminster this Summer/Autumn, and it's great to see plenty of young people being introduced to the discipline at each one.

It's Official..! Parkour makes the Dictionary

Long overdue, the words Parkour and Freerunning have now been entered into that bastion of the English language, the Oxford English Dictionary. The original application for the words to be recognized was made by Parkour UK almost two years ago, and finally it has come through - the definition, subject to input and revisions from the bods at the OED, is definitely not perfect but it's a major step for the discipline in terms of recognition.

A Royal Visit...

Yesterday saw a royal visit to the world of parkour as we recommenced sessions for the London Youth Organisation ! and Islington Council at the Peel Institute: HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, visited the centre and observed the class in action and seemed to like the look of the training going on. Now we don't expect to see the royal family attending an outdoor class anytime soon, but it's nice to know they have an eye on things ;)

Blane in Denmark: Streetcamp 6

Tomorrow Team Member Blane will be heading out to teach at Streetmovement's bi-annual Streetcamp in Denmark, this the 6th time the event has run. The week-long camp is designed for 13-18 year olds and is situated at Denmark's famous Gerlev Sports Academy - a fantastic place for training and getting fit and healthy! BBC Movie Shoot

Today saw us filming with BBC Switch, providing stunt doubling and choreography for action sequences in the forthcoming movie, BBC Switch Musical. Working with the various BBC teams has always produced good collaborations and great results, and is always good fun. This one has proved to be no exception, with some good footage captured in a central London location with Developing Athlete Daniel Woodrow providing the doubling for the lead character.

Sunday Shenanigans

Todays Women's Jam went well, thanks to all those who came to central London to take part at the fantastic Elephant and Castle location. The Weekend Wakeup class beforehand was busy as usual, good to see so many people out training on a Sunday morning. Today also saw one of our Developing Athletes, Daniel, doing a music video shoot in the same area - we'll have some footage of the piece up soon.

Theatrics in London: Update

Our Developing Athletes put on a good show at the Young Vic Theatre, displaying their skills on a balcony stage overlooking the London streets. Sprinklings of rain didn't put anyone off, and the free-form show went very smoothly. Well done to Daniel, Matt, Aaron, Kyle, Alex, Laurie and Adham and to Yao for co-ordinating. Expect to see more from these young guys in the near future...

This month's British Journal of School Nursing (Vol. 5, Iss. 8, 08 Oct 2010) contains an article by Dan explaining the concept behind parkour and how a non-competitive sport can help engage all pupils in physical activity and have a postive impact on their health and wellbeing. The UK's National Governing Body, Parkour UK, will be running its next ADAPT instructor qualification course at the end of October in the Westminster Borough of London. The course runs from October 26-29 inclusive, and is for the Level One 'Assistant' qualification, and is now FULLY BOOKED.

Weekend class at Hyde Park.

With Parkour Generations delivering free workshops for the whole of Sunday 10 October at the Royal Parks Half Marathon in Hyde Park, the Weekend Wakeup Class is now scheduled to be at the same location. We fully intend to use all the equipment the team will be bringing for the event and incorporate parts of the park for a unique class this weekend. To participate in the class be outside the Hyde Park Corner tube station (Piccadilly line) next to the Hyde Park gate. This is a one-time event for the year and the classes will resume to normal locations the following week.

October 17: London Women's Jam

This month's Women's Jam will at the very excellent Elephant and Castle training spot on Sunday 17th October, starting at 1.30pm, to allow those who wish to wake themselves up with the Sunday Wakeup Class (also at Elephant) to do just that... We will meet outside Elephant and Castle tube station shopping centre exit at 1.30pm. For those of you that are new to the Jams, they are free and relaxed training sessions for women only (though we regularly have a few male/female instructors kicking around for extra tips and advice).

This week we will be filming for Nippon TV's hit show, ITTEQ; the most popular variety programme in Japan for the last three years running. The show has a public of 20,000,000 people and airs in Japan every Sunday night at 8pm - so this will help bring the discipline to a whole new, and very large, audience.
